After weeks of unoptimistic eclipse forecasts, the clouds cleared just in time to witness the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse at home in North Texas.

Our stay in Jasper National Park was wildfire smoky to the point where we couldn't even see faint outlines of close peaks let alone anything further. I used the webcams at the Columbia Icefields to figure out which morning might be best for a waterfall excursion and there ended up being one morning with slightly more promising visibility. I ventured out to Athabasca Falls only to discover the area blanketed with fog. Luckily, I hung around for awhile exploring the area and right as I was about to leave the fog started to lift and reveal the mountains and morning sun over the waterfall.

I seem to have gotten a bit lazy at road trip post

I seem to have gotten a bit lazy at road trip posts, the rain and wildfire smoke at Banff and Jasper ruined my momentum and then I never got back into it... but... we should be back in Texas soon and I'll have lots of time to catch up and post the remainder of our trip!

While we did get rained out of a lot of our Banff plans, I did manage to schedule my sunrise Moraine Lake shuttle for the only day where there was the possibility of morning light on the mountains.

Onwards to Banff! We'd had pretty good weather (and wildfire haze) luck for most of our trip but Banff & Jasper was where that all finally caught up with us. Lots of rain in Banff and Jasper was lots of wildfire haze, which put a damper on some of our planned activities. I think that just means we'll have to go back!

After several recent trips to Glacier National Park, we finally made it over the border to Waterton Lakes National Park, the Canada side of Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. Scenic view from Logan Pass as we drove Going-to-the-Sun Road. Glacier has quickly become our most visited National Park and this is our 4th visit in 6 years. We spent a lot of time around Rising Sun/Logan Pass on our previous trips so this trip we opted to lodge at Lake McDonald and Many Glacier.
