This was our first trip to the Southern Oregon coast and there were a ton of trails I wanted to explore but with only two days in Brookings we had to pick and choose. A lot of the coastal trails were too challenging to attempt with small children and the morning weather was foggy enough that I backtracked to the California redwoods on one morning since I couldn't see anything along the Oregon coast. Our two night stay was a bit short for all the hikes in the area, but it was beautiful and we definitely hope to return some day for a longer stay!

One more from foggy wanderings through the Northern California redwoods.

By this point in our trip our hotel was in Oregon but when I woke up to a foggy marine layer I decided to backtrack into California for more redwoods. Here's a view from a morning drive through the narrow unpaved Howland Hill Road through the heart of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

2021 Summer Road Trip (2 months)

So, I got really lazy about posting on here and I feel like I should get back into it. Before I disappeared I was not even halfway done posting images from our 2-month summer road trip so I think I'll try to restart that, though now that we've clearly finished said road trip I'll start off by posting a vague map of our route.

Green pins are places I posted here before my 6-month social media hiatus, and blue is stuff I hadn't gotten to yet.

We started our trip with some family visits in Texas and then stopped at the Grand Canyon on our drive to California. At this point we've driven the TX to CA routes enough times that we opted to start out with long driving days to get to CA with minimal stops and then take our time up the Pacific Coast. We drove the coastal route from Southern CA to Oregon to the Olympic Peninsula and San Juan Islands in Washington. Then we dipped down through the Cascade Range to Crater Lake, which was the last place we had booked before starting our journey.

We originally thought our return route would take us through CA-NV-UT-CO-TX, but as we were looking for last-minute Yosemite cancellations, we found some cancellations within Glacier National Park instead, so decided our return route would backtrack north through OR & WA to Montana, then return to Texas via North and South Dakota.

Anyway, we'll see if I can successfully finish posting about this trip before I get distracted by new travels or the pretty flowers (bluebonnets).

Here is the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse; completed in 1868 and originally located at Cape Mendocino, the westernmost point in California. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1951 and left to slowly crumble into the sea. In 1998, the deteriorated lighthouse was removed from Cape Mendocino and was restored and reassembled at its new home in Shelter Cove.

As we left Fort Bragg we finally reached 𝘰𝘶𝘳 uncharted territory. We've previously visited a large amount of the Pacific Coast (on various trips) but this was our first trip driving the coast between Fort Bragg, CA and Bandon, OR. Our first stop was the secluded town of Shelter Cove along California's Lost Coast, reached by a winding 22 mile drive from Hwy 101.

The skies were completely overcast in Fort Bragg but we could see a glimmer of light to the south so I went on a quick excursion to find this moody sunset from the Mendocino Headlands.

The small coastal community of Gualala (pronounced Wah-la-la) was one of our overnight stops so I figure I'll post another one from there. Here's a morning view of the sand bar and bluffs from Gualala Point Regional Park.

Northern California's Bowling Ball Beach. This one is a tricky one — if the tide is too low the water won't be anywhere near the rocks, and if the tide is too high they'll be completely covered. I went at sunrise and the tide was a bit lower than I would have preferred but at least there was a little sky color.
