Crater Lake + Wildfires II

When we started planning our summer road trip we had a plan to drive from Texas to California, up the coast to Washington, visit the San Juan islands and then somehow make it down to Crater Lake National Park, which we had not visited since our 4-month road trip in 2009.

On the Road in Texas: Dallas to Lubbock

On the Road in Texas Dallas to Lubbock Once again we found ourselves in West Texas for Thanksgiving, so I naturally I had to continue my quest for cotton field photos and scenic pump jacks.  The skies were clear and boring and we didn’t stop much on the drive out. The original plan was an open-ended trip where we would visit family and hopefully find some nice cotton fields and stay as many days as I wanted, but this year’s […]

Side Trips From Las Vegas: Red Rock Canyon

This was the shortest of side trips.  We were visiting family Northwest of Las Vegas.  The clouds looked decent, so we decided to explore for sunset.  I picked “towards Red Rock Canyon.” We managed to get all the way to the 13-mile Red Rock Canyon loop, but lost daylight very quickly after.  Unfortunately we had no time for hiking or even seeing much of the latter part of the loop.  I got a few shots from the Calico Hills at […]

Side Trips From Las Vegas: Death Valley National Park

It’s been awhile since we visited Death Valley Valley National Park, and by “awhile” I mean nearly 9 years.  The last (and only) time we visited Death Valley was in April of 2009, during the first couple weeks of our four month road trip around the United States.  We drove in from Bishop one day, camped overnight, and drove to Las Vegas the following day. I can’t say we spent much longer in the park on this go around.  We […]

The Endless Cotton Fields of West Texas

I’ve been living in Texas seven years now and I’ve decided it’s time to make more of an effort to expand my Texas portfolio beyond bluebonnet fields and the Dallas skyline.  My most recent target?  The ripe cotton fields of Lubbock, TX. A trip to visit family in Lubbock conveniently coincided with cotton season.  We decided to schedule our arrival so that we would be approaching Lubbock’s cotton fields around sunset hours. I didn’t have a particular spot in mind […]

The 2017 Great American Eclipse

I’ve always wanted to see a total solar eclipse,  Unfortunately for me, the last total solar eclipse to cross the United States was in 1979, before I was born.  We previously traveled to be on the path of an annular solar eclipse on May 10, 2013 (which is where the moon is too close to completely cover the sun and you see a “ring of fire” rather than the total blackout and corona), but we’d been eagerly waiting for a […]

Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway

I finally caught up on some of my American the Beautiful coin art projects so I convinced Travis it was time to visit another! We decided on a weekend trip to North Carolina, mostly to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway. We also stopped through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Blue Ridge Parkway is 469 miles long and extends from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. We met up with the Blue Ridge […]
